We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us. – Joseph Campbell.
In 1949, Joseph Campbell wrote The Hero With a Thousand Faces. In this book he studied and dissected the folklore, mythical fables and literature of different cultures, over many centuries. He found there were commonalities between the elements that define a hero’s journey. In Fight Club Boot Camp, we discuss this journey. We discuss the epic story of God and his salvation for every man, writ large in every storyteller’s heart. Joseph Campbell’s discoveries are a reflection of this. He describes the broken man, lost, bewildered and afraid. He describes this man finding strength through adversity, and finding his heart. He describes this man being rescued.
But this is only half the story.
Most heroic tales conclude when this hero, who has regained his strength, offers his strength for others. In Boot Camp men recover their strength. In Special Ops they learn to strengthen others. This is our great commission: to be a disciple and to make disciples. To offer our strength for others. To lay down our lives for our friends.
Special Ops is a retreat offered to men who have already taken the Boot Camp journey, and wish to discover how what they learned of themselves may impact their culture, society and families. The retreat includes live teaching sessions, films, reflection times and journaling.
Men. This is the next step in your journey. You are named and called, to set the captives free.
